Parent Resources
Short, practical reads from our pediatric specialists.
Why Baby Teeth Matter
Baby teeth help children chew, speak and smile, and they hold space for the adult teeth underneath. A cavity in a baby tooth can cause pain and infection, so they deserve the same care as adult teeth.
How to Choose a Pediatric Dentist
Look for specialty training, a team that is comfortable with children, and a dentist who explains things to your child before doing them. Ask questions at the first visit.
Healthy Habits at Home
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss once teeth touch, and keep sugary drinks to mealtimes. Help with brushing until your child can tie their own shoes.
Fluoride for Children
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps reverse the earliest stage of decay. Children get it from fluoride toothpaste, fluoridated tap water and the fluoride varnish applied at checkups.
- Toothpaste: a rice-sized smear under age three, pea-sized after.
- Tap water: many community water systems add fluoride; your water supplier can confirm yours.
- Varnish: applied at checkups every six months.
Snacks and Drinks for Healthy Teeth
Water and plain milk are the best drinks for children’s teeth. Cheese, yogurt without added sugar, fresh fruit and vegetables make good snacks. Juice, soda, sports drinks and sticky snacks are easiest on teeth when kept to mealtimes.
- Best drinks: water and plain milk.
- Good snacks: cheese, plain yogurt, crunchy vegetables, fresh fruit.
- Mealtime only: juice, soda, sports drinks and sticky sweets.
Helping With Brushing
Most children need a parent’s help with brushing until about age eight, when they have the hand control to reach every surface. Until then, let them brush first and then finish for them, especially at bedtime.
- Two minutes, twice a day: morning and before bed.
- Parent finishes: until about age eight.
- Floss once teeth touch: usually the back baby molars first.
When to Call Between Visits
Call or text (757) 471-2900 if your child has tooth pain, swelling, a broken or knocked out tooth, white or brown spots near the gums, or bleeding gums that do not improve with brushing.
- Pain or swelling: call the same day.
- Injury: follow the steps on our emergency care page.
- Spots or bleeding gums: book a visit soon.
- Ready when you are
