Space Maintainers
Space maintainers when a baby tooth is lost early.
Holding Space for the Adult Tooth
When a baby tooth is lost early, from decay or injury, the teeth beside it can drift into the gap. A space maintainer is a small custom appliance that holds the gap open until the adult tooth comes in.
- Custom fit: made for your child’s mouth.
- Fixed or removable: the dentist explains which type fits the gap.
- Temporary: it comes out once the adult tooth arrives.
Children adjust to a space maintainer within a few days. Sticky candy and chewing on the wire can loosen it, so the dentist will go over what to avoid.
Why the Gap Matters
Adult teeth need room. If neighboring teeth tip into an early gap, the adult tooth can come in crooked or stay trapped.
When a Space Maintainer Is Needed
A space maintainer is considered when a baby tooth is lost early, from decay or injury, and the adult tooth underneath is not ready to come in for some time. The dentist checks X-rays to see how far away that adult tooth is.
- Early loss: a baby tooth lost well before its time.
- Back teeth most often: baby molars hold space for longer.
- X-rays guide the choice: they show when the adult tooth will arrive.
Caring for a Space Maintainer
Brush around it carefully twice a day, avoid sticky and very hard foods, and do not push on it with fingers or the tongue. The dentist checks the fit at each visit and removes it once the adult tooth starts to come in.
- Brush around it: food can collect at the edges.
- Skip sticky candy: caramels and gum can loosen it.
- Call if loose: a loose or broken maintainer should be checked soon.
Will a space maintainer affect speech?
Some children notice a small difference for a few days while the tongue gets used to it. Most adjust quickly.
Can my child play sports with a space maintainer?
Yes. For contact sports, a mouthguard protects both the teeth and the space maintainer.
Is it uncomfortable?
Most children get used to it within a few days.
