When Your Child Needs Braces
Orthodontic referrals to Behl Orthodontics.
Braces Through Behl Orthodontics
ICON Pediatric Dentistry does not provide braces. When the dentist sees a bite, crowding or spacing problem, we refer your child to Behl Orthodontics, part of the same ICON group.
- Spotted at checkups: the dentist watches the bite as adult teeth come in.
- Referred within ICON: records and notes go to your orthodontist.
- Back to us for checkups: children keep seeing their pediatric dentist during treatment.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic check by age seven. Your pediatric dentist will tell you if an earlier look is needed.
Checkups Continue During Braces
Braces make brushing harder. Children in orthodontic treatment keep coming to ICON for cleanings every six months.
Signs a Child May Need an Orthodontist
The dentist watches for bite and spacing problems at every checkup. Signs that often lead to a referral include crowded or overlapping teeth, teeth that do not meet when biting, a jaw that shifts, early or late loss of baby teeth, and thumb sucking that continues as adult teeth come in.
- Crowding or spacing: teeth overlapping or large gaps.
- Bite problems: overbite, underbite or crossbite.
- Habits: thumb sucking beyond the early years.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Many children do not need treatment then; the evaluation sets a baseline.
Healthy Teeth During Braces
Braces trap food and plaque, so cleanings every six months matter even more. Your child should brush after meals, floss with a threader or water flosser, and limit sticky and sugary foods that cause white spots around brackets.
- Brush after meals: around every bracket and along the gumline.
- Floss daily: a threader or water flosser makes it easier.
- Watch sugar: sticky candy and soda cause marks around brackets.
FAQ
When Your Child Needs Braces Questions
Straight answers from a pediatric specialist.
Does ICON Pediatric Dentistry offer braces?
No. We refer children who need orthodontic care to Behl Orthodontics.
Does an early evaluation mean my child needs braces now?
Usually not. Many early evaluations end with a plan to watch growth, and treatment starts only if and when it is needed.
Will my child still see ICON Pediatric Dentistry?
Yes. Cleanings and checkups continue here during orthodontic treatment.
