Care From the First Tooth On
ICON Pediatric Dentistry cares for children from infancy through the teen years at six offices in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton and Suffolk. Every child is treated by a pediatric dentist who completed an ADA-accredited pediatric dentistry residency.
- Prevention: first visits, cleanings, fluoride and sealants.
- Treatment: fillings, pediatric crowns and space maintainers.
- Special care: special needs dentistry, sedation and anesthesia, and emergencies.
When a child needs braces, we refer to Behl Orthodontics and keep seeing your child for checkups.

Care for Children Who Need More
Some children need more time, a quieter room or a different approach. ICON cares for children with special health care needs, children with strong dental fear, and children who need urgent help after an injury, at every office.
- Special health care needs: visits planned around your child.
- Dental fear: a slower pace, with nothing done before it is explained.
- Emergencies: call or text (757) 471-2900 for same day guidance.
Tell us about your child when you book: sensory needs, medical conditions, past experiences or anything that helps the visit go well. The team reads it before your child arrives.
For children who need treatment under sedation or general anesthesia, ICON provides it in office. The dentist reviews your child’s health and every option with you first, and the sedation pages explain what to expect.
Care for Every Age
Dental needs change as children grow. Babies need a first visit and help with brushing, school-age children need sealants and checkups as adult teeth arrive, and teens need guidance through wisdom teeth, sports and braces.
- Babies and toddlers: first visit by age one, fluoride, feeding and brushing advice.
- School age: sealants on new molars, cavity prevention, sports mouthguards.
- Teens: checkups through braces, wisdom tooth monitoring, independent brushing habits.
Why a Pediatric Specialist
A pediatric dentist completes two to three years of additional residency training after dental school, focused only on children, including infants, teens and children with special health care needs. Offices, tools and explanations are built around children.
- Extra training: a pediatric dentistry residency after dental school.
- Children only: from the first tooth through the teen years.
- Special health care needs: trained care for every child.
Parents often ask whether a family dentist can see young children. Many do. A pediatric dentist brings specialty training in child development, behavior and the conditions that affect growing teeth.
That training shows up in small ways: shorter explanations, child-sized tools, a team used to toddlers who will not open their mouths, and a plan for teens who have not seen a dentist in years. Children who grow up at a pediatric office usually move to a family or general dentist in their late teens.
Prevention Comes First
Most dental care for children should be prevention. Regular checkups, fluoride, sealants and good habits at home stop most cavities before they start, so treatment visits stay rare and small.
- Every six months: checkups catch problems early.
- Sealants and fluoride: protection that brushing alone cannot give.
- Home habits: a simple plan for brushing, flossing and snacks.
When a cavity does appear, catching it at a six-month checkup usually means a small filling instead of a crown or an extraction later.
- Ready when you are
